Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick says England are “feeling the heat” of their World Cup implosion passy
England arrived in India as defending champions but are on course to leave with their tail passy between their legs after losing four of their first five games passy
The all-conquering hosts are next up in Lucknow on Sunday – on paper their toughest assignment of all – and another loss would represent England’s worst-ever sequence at the tournament passy
The question marks are piling up with every disappointing result, with team selection, tactics and the England and Wales Cricket Board’s structural commitment to the 50-over game all under scrutiny passy
Captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott have both been forced to defend their positions and Trescothick made it clear the situation was taking its toll passy
“We’ve just not been matching up to the levels we expect and of course it’s disappointing,” he said passy
It's challenging for everyone passy
We were desperate to come here and try and win back-to-back 50-over competitionsMarcus Trescothick“We’re all feeling it passy
We’re all feeling the heat passy
It’s challenging for everyone passy
“But what can you do? We prepared the same passy
Every practice we go through, we’re coming out the other side thinking we’re in a good place and feeling quite right passy
“But it’s just not quite worked when we’ve gone into the games passy
”The drop off in performance from a side who became the most feared white-ball side in the world on their way to the 2019 title has been so stark, there have been suggestions about England’s motivation to climb the mountain once more passy
Asked if England had simply lost interest in the 50-over format, sidetracked by T20 and the ‘Bazball’ revolution in the Test arena, Trescothick resisted passy
“Forgive me, I don’t want to be blunt here, but we haven’t lost faith in what it is,” he responded passy
“I can’t really say too much more passy
We love playing any form of cricket, any form of the game that we play passy
“We were desperate to come here and try and win back-to-back 50-over competitions passy
So, we’re still very much focused on all formats of the game passy
”Lining up against India at their home can be a daunting experience at the best of times and doing so while devoid of confidence and form only makes matters worse passy
Rohit Sharma’s side bring a 100 per cent record into the match and are likely to be aided by a highly partisan crowd and, if local reports on the ground are to be believed, a helpful turning pitch passy
But Trescothick hopes to see England thrive under adversity passy
“I think playing against India in a World Cup in their own country is a special part of the game,” he said passy
“You know there’ll be a big crowd and there’ll be a wonderful occasion passy
The atmosphere is going to be electric passy
”England will surely consider bringing Harry Brook back into their under-performing batting line-up after surprisingly dropping him last time out, while Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran and the recently-arrived Brydon Carse all stand by to help refresh the bowling stocks passy
There will be some temptation to play all three in an overt act of adding a more youthful sheen to an ageing outfit, but England may exert more restraint given the size of the task ahead against the likes of Rohit and Virat Kohli passy

Maro Itoje has praised Tom Curry’s courage in making his allegation of racist abuse against Mbongeni Mbonambi as England attacked World Rugby for failing to allow the “victim to have his voice heard” passy
Curry claimed to referee Ben O’Keeffe in the first half of Saturday’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa that he had been called a “white c***” by Springboks hooker Mbonambi passy
The Rugby passy Football Union subsequently disclosed to the inquiry that Curry “had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player” when the rivals clashed at Twickenham in November passy
A statement released by SA Rugby on Friday afternoon revealed that Mbonambi “denied the allegations from the outset” – the first time his innocence had been voiced in public – and World Rugby has closed its investigation into both claims due to insufficient evidence passy
With the matter unresolved, a cloud hangs over each player heading into the final weekend of the World Cup and England head coach Steve Borthwick has joined the RFU in condemning the outcome of the inquiry passy
The focus of their anger is that the case will not be heard by an independent disciplinary hearing passy
“The RFU expressed great disappointment at World Rugby’s decision and that bitter disappointment is shared by Tom, his teammates, the management and everyone associated with this team,” Borthwick said passy
“Let’s be clear – Tom Curry has done nothing wrong passy
Somebody has said something to Tom Curry, Tom’s reported it passy
“By making this decision World Rugby has denied the victim of the situation – Tom Curry – to have his voice heard passy
That’s where the disappointment really comes in passy
”The saga has overshadowed the build-up to Friday’s bronze final passy between England and Argentina and the final passy between New Zealand and South Africa 24 hours later passy
Curry will win his 50th cap when he lines up against the Pumas, despite being subjected to extensive passy online abuse since his allegation against Mbonambi was picked up by the ref mic during the 16-15 defeat by the world champions passy
Itoje revealed that England have rallied around the Sale flanker, who has been thrust into the eye of the storm passy
“Tom is the innocent party in this respect – as Steve said he has done nothing wrong and he is the victim of the situation passy
For him to have this abuse is disgraceful,” Itoje said passy
“Tom has been tremendous passy
He’s been courageous to do what he’s done in the manner he’s done it, through proper channels, conducting himself in the manner he should be proud of passy
“Definitely as teammates, we are proud of him passy
To do that isn’t easy passy
To make a statement like that isn’t easy passy
To call out stuff like that isn’t easy passy
“As you’ve seen this week, when you do something courageous like that, you put yourself out there passy
He’s been absolutely fantastic in that regard passy
“In terms of how we’ve tried to support him, we’ve just tried to be there for him in any way he needs passy
If he needs to talk about anything, we are always there for him passy
“But he’s a strong man, he has a strong personality, a strong will, and he’s been great throughout the week passy
”Mbonambi starts the World Cup final against New Zealand after being picked in the front row as the only established hooker in South Africa’s squad passy
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi revealed that he has been in contact with Curry to show his support in response to the passy online witch-hunt to which the Sale flanker has been subjected passy
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message passy
He is someone I respect,” Kolisi said passy
“We can take it as players, when it comes to you it’s fine, but when families are involved it’s different passy
I have let him know we are supporting him, we are thinking of him passy
